Client Background
Our client was a food manufacturer based in Belgium, specializing in premium nuts, nut snacks, and nut oil products. As part of its new product line development, the company was searching for high-quality glass jars for nuts and matching tinplate lids for retail packaging.
The brand focused on providing natural and premium food products to European consumers. Since the products would be distributed through supermarkets, specialty food stores, and online channels, packaging safety, appearance, and regulatory compliance were key considerations.
The client selected glass jars as the primary packaging solution because glass provides excellent barrier protection, does not affect food taste, and offers a premium appearance suitable for high-value food products.
For the closure system, the client preferred tinplate lug lids because they provide reliable vacuum sealing performance and are widely used for food packaging applications.
However, during the supplier evaluation process, the client raised a specific requirement:
The tinplate lids must be PVC-free.
Challenge
The main challenge was finding a suitable sealing solution that could meet both the client’s packaging requirements and European market regulations.
For most traditional lug lids, the internal sealing compound is commonly made with food-grade PVC material.
PVC sealing compounds have been widely used in food packaging because they offer:

However, the client’s target market in Europe had stricter requirements regarding PVC-free packaging materials.

What We Discovered During Research
After receiving the client’s requirements, our team conducted a detailed investigation into different sealing materials used for tinplate lids.
During the research process, we found that the PVC-free requirement mainly relates to the sealing gasket material inside the lid.
Traditional lug lids usually use PVC sealing compounds because of their mature production technology. However, with increasing demand for safer and more environmentally friendly packaging, alternative materials such as TPE have become more popular.
Our technical team researched and evaluated TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) sealing compounds as a replacement solution.
The testing and material evaluation showed several important findings:

Compared with traditional PVC liners, TPE offers:

Based on these findings, TPE became the most suitable option for the client’s European market requirements.
