Case Study: Solving Printing Failure on Cone-Shaped Juice Bottles for a Premium Brand in South Korea

This case study explores how a Korean beverage brand solved glass juice bottle printing failure with high-temperature silkscreen printing, ensuring durable branding and sterilization resistance.

Client Background

Our client was a rapidly growing premium beverage brand based in Seoul, South Korea, specializing in cold-pressed juices and functional health drinks. As part of a new high-end product launch, the company sourced custom cone-shaped glass juice bottles from Roetell for its retail collection.

The brand positioned itself as a provider of luxury, natural beverages and placed a strong emphasis on packaging aesthetics. Since the products would be distributed through premium department stores and upscale cafes, maintaining a flawless and durable presentation was essential.

The client selected unique cone-shaped glass bottles with direct-to-bottle printing, creating a modern and minimalist packaging design that aligned perfectly with their premium brand image.

Challenge

Shortly after receiving the customized packaging, the client began conducting internal sterilization tests before full-scale filling production.

During the testing process, they encountered a critical issue.

The printed branding and logos started peeling and falling off the bottles during the boiling water sterilization test, which required 20 minutes of exposure to 100°C water.

Since the integrity of the branding was a core requirement for their premium positioning, the client immediately contacted our team to determine why the decoration could not withstand their processing requirements. The project faced a potential delay as the client needed a solution that ensured both durability and visual accuracy on their unique bottle shape.

What Happened During Testing

The client provided detailed information regarding their sterilization protocol. Before filling, the bottles were:

  • Subjected to a pre-rinse cycle.
  • Fully submerged in boiling water for 20 minutes.
  • Rapidly cooled before moving to the filling line.

After treatment, the logos on bottles decorated with regular silkscreen printing showed visible peeling and bubbling. While the glass bottle itself remained structurally sound, the decoration failed to meet the necessary durability standards for heat exposure.

What We Discovered

After receiving the feedback, our technical team immediately initiated an investigation and performed laboratory testing on the ink samples.

The results revealed that the issue was not a manufacturing defect in the glass, but rather an incorrect choice of printing technology for the client’s specific sterilization process.

Our testing confirmed several important findings:

  1. Regular Silkscreen Inks Are Heat-Sensitive: Low-temperature organic inks form a surface-level bond that undergoes chemical breakdown when exposed to prolonged boiling.
  2. Adhesion Failure Under Thermal Stress: The intense heat and moisture during the 20-minute sterilization cycle caused the organic pigments to lose their bond with the glass surface.
  3. Cone-Shaped Geometry Requires Distortion Compensation: For tapered bottles, standard artwork application can lead to text stretching if the design is not specifically adapted for the varying bottle diameter.

The failure was the result of using standard decoration methods for a process that required industrial-grade thermal resistance.

Roetell’s Solution

After identifying the root cause, we recommended switching to industrial high-temperature silkscreen printing and provided an adapted artwork design.

Our recommendations included:

Switch to Ceramic Inks: We utilized high-temperature ceramic inks that fuse directly into the glass molecular structure at temperatures between 500°C and 600°C.

Implement High-Temperature Firing: The bottles were processed through a Lehr kiln, ensuring the design became a permanent part of the glass.

Apply Distortion Correction: Our design team adjusted the client’s artwork to compensate for the cone shape, ensuring the logo appeared perfectly proportioned on the tapered surface.

Conduct Pre-Shipment Validation: We performed a 20-minute boiling test in our facility to verify the new printing method met all requirements.

Result

After implementing the high-temperature printing solution, the client successfully resolved the peeling issue. The packaging proceeded to production and distribution without further problems.

The project ultimately allowed the client to:

  • Maintain a premium, scuff-proof appearance for their juice packaging.
  • Ensure the brand logo remained intact through rigorous sterilization.
  • Launch the new juice line in Seoul on schedule.
  • Avoid the costs and delays associated with packaging failure.

Most importantly, the experience highlighted a critical lesson for beverage brands: packaging performance depends on matching the decoration technology to the specific processing environment. By choosing high-temperature silkscreen printing, brands can ensure their packaging remains as premium as their product, even under the most demanding conditions.
